Shipmates, it appears we are at a decision point!
Our 9 Dec guest speaker has cancelled due to a competing obligation. This leaves us high and dry: we already made the decision to constrain Meetups to higher-profile guests, and we are fresh out of those for the foreseeable future.
So we have a couple of choices:
- We can continue to operate the RINGKNOCKER community while scheduling high-profile guests like Gen. McChrystal as we are able, leaving all community functionality online. This option costs me a bunch of time and about $400/month in regular overhead, plus a couple hundred more per scheduled Meetup.
- We can acknowledge that RINGKNOCKER provided its most valuable service during the COVID lockdowns, pat ourselves on the back for a job well done, and shut the community down.
If anybody can think of a third option, I’d love to hear about it.
We will continue to provide data services to our Sponsors and community services to our Subscribers for as long as it is economically feasible to do so. As we stand, subscriptions and sponsorships amount to just enough to balance the books… but I reasonably expect a number of unsubscribes to follow this message, so that decision might be made for us in short order.
The real challenge for me personally is opportunity cost. As it turns out, running an online community of military officers is NOT a great business model… at least not for me. It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve you all. I did it to the limit of my ability, and I left nothing on the mat… but it is probably long past time for me to focus on making an actual living.
If any of you have an interest in backing the RINGKNOCKER community or in leveraging the knowhow and systems we have developed to power your own online community, please get in touch. Also, you’ve all heard my intro often enough to know my skill set. If you have a need that involves data or software, again please get in touch: I am actively seeking employment!
Until you withdraw your permission, I will continue to invade your inbox from time to time to share my story, and I hope you will return the favor.
