RINGKNOCKER Virtual Meetup #41 with Jeff Heely
The guest speaker for this week’s RINGKNOCKER Virtual Meetup is Jeff Heely (USNA ’77).
Jeff was born in Belleville, Illinois on the most powerful military day of the year: March 4th. Wait for it. At the Naval Academy he majored in tennis with a minor in Management & Technology, switching to sailing after a shoulder surgery. Jeff served as a Surface Warfare Officer out of San Diego and San Francisco: Communications, Navigator, and Ops Boss on USS ST LOUIS (LKA 116), and Flag Lieutenant and Aide to COMNAVBASE San Diego/San Francisco.
Jeff left the Navy after 6 years and went into the investment world: hedge funds, private equity, fintech, investment banking, and lots of other ways to stretch the brain. He’s still an avid tennis player, and has played with the same USNA ’77 doubles partner for 43 years! Jef plays tennis at San Quentin, has worked the Special Olympics for 20 years, reads voraciously, hikes daily, and is a master at making connections.
Jeff’s topic this week? Stories! In his own words…
Biographies are written backwards. As I careen down the backside of the mountain of life, no guardrails, slightly balding tires, seatbelt reluctantly on; I marvel at the way my life has transpired. What a story!
We’ll explore stories, how to live your own best one. We’ll also talk about how different types of stories affect different parts of the brain; utilizing story types to impact short-term motivation or long-term behavior. Being an effective leader is enhanced by your ability to share thoughts, create teams, empower individuals, accept failure, and sustain motivation.
