The guest speaker at this week’s RINGKNOCKER Virtual Meetup is former Surface Warfare Officer Marco Nelson (USNA ’06).
Marco is co-founder of rapidly-scaling technology startup RentCheck, and he has a fascinating story to tell us about opportunity, problem-solving, and getting things done.
RentCheck co-founders Marco and Lydia met in the Tulane MBA program. She had recently won a courtroom dispute with a former landlord because she’d had the foresight to take some time-stamped photos. He was was a Navy officer managing rental properties across multiple states, and had been unimpressed with the integrity of the rental process. They both saw a need for better and more streamlined property documentation, and the result was RentCheck: a property management tool that guides users through an easy and organized inspection process using just their smartphone.
In 2019, RentCheck was accepted into the Techstars accelerator, and in 2020, Lydia was welcomed into the inaugural Female Founders First accelerator by Barclays and Techstars and named a rising star in real estate by Business Insider. Marco won Veteran Shark Tank in 2020. The RentCheck app now supports hundreds of buildings managing tens of thousands of units, but their mission remains the same: to make renting fair and transparent for everyone involved.
This week, Marco will tackle the RentCheck story from several directions. He will talk about the big picture: finding an opportunity in a broken process. And we will also talk small-ball: just how DOES one scale an application from just a few users into the hundreds of thousands, without compromising functionality or service?
