The guest speaker at this week’s RINGKNOCKER Virtual Meetup is Jeff Amerine (USNA ’84).
Jeff is nationally recognized for the creation of lasting venture ecosystems, and co-authored in 2021 the Amazon bestselling book, Creating Startup Junkies: Building Sustainable Venture Ecosystems in Unexpected Places.
Jeff has held senior leadership positions in nine startups and multiple Fortune 500 companies, including American Freightways and FedEx Freight, and has made 90+ venture investments. Jeff now leads Startup Junkie Consulting, and co-leads Innovation Junkie and Cadron Capital Partners.
Jeff served as Associate Vice Provost, Research and Economic Development, and Director of Technology Ventures at the University of Arkansas until leaving to pursue Startup Junkie Consulting full-time in 2015. He still serves as an adjunct professor of entrepreneurship at the Sam M. Walton College of Business at University of Arkansas. Jeff graduated from United States Naval Academy in 1984, served as an Air Force Officer for 6 years, and holds a Master of Science in Operations Management from the University of Arkansas.
Traditional economic development is a lethal, zero-sum game. Regional economic developers “attract jobs” by giving multinational firms lots of tax money to set up local plants, manufacturing facilities, or offices. People with political connections win big. Everybody else loses.
Meanwhile, Kauffman Foundation research shows that 85% of all net new job creation comes from startups and small businesses. A venture ecosystem built to last takes talent, capital, an entrepreneurial culture, and community engagement. This is the Moneyball play: the on base percentage is economic development that sticks, and success is a question of commitment, creativity, and elbow grease… not tax dollars.
The failure rate on innovation is high. This is where entrepreneurial support organizations like Startup Junkie play a critical role. This week Jeff cover the four pillars required to create a solid venture ecosystem, along with tools that allow any region to get started.
Do you have the audacity to believe you can create something REALLY new? Then DON’T MISS THIS ONE!
