RINGKNOCKER Virtual Meetup #69 with Robert Williscroft

September 16 @ 20:00 - 21:30 EDT
Virtual Event Virtual Event

The guest speaker at this week’s RINGKNOCKER Virtual Meetup is official RINGKNOCKER Dad Robert Williscroft (NESEP ’69)!

Robert has just published Operation Arctic Sting, the third in his series of Mac MacDowell Mission series of adventure novels. These books follow a fictionalized version of the Cold War era Navy saturation dive team that pulled off the infamous OPERATION IVY BELLS, which sent divers covertly to tap into Soviet communications cables at extreme depth. And he should know: Robert led that dive team in real life for several years!

Robert joined us in the speaker’s chair once before after the publication of Operation Ice Breaker, the second book in the series. This time around, though, there’s a bit of a twist!

One of the key characters in the new novel is Borysko, a thirty-foot, six-ton Orca: a killer whale. This one is fiction, obviously, but as many working divers know, the kind of relationship depicted in the novel is real and not that uncommon. We’ve asked Robert to spend some time during his presentation unpacking that, and share some of his actual experiences with marine mammals and other denizens of the deep that collectively inspired the Borysko character.

Many RINGKNOCKER Meetups are long on actionable content. This one is more about sea stories! If you love a good yarn—or if you’ve got one of your own to share!—I hope you will join us this week.

I’d like to extend a special invitation to the Navy divers out there, both of the Cold War generation and you younger ones. This is your story too!
