RINGKNOCKER Virtual Meetup #70 with Jared Bradley
Science Fiction nerds like me will remember the classic 1997 biopunk film Gattaca, where Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman scrambled to defeat Big Brother’s ubiquitous, instantaneous DNA identification. As DNA evidence has become increasingly important in high-profile cases over the years (remember O.J.’s glove?), I’ve often wondered just how far we are from that Gattaca future.
Well, look no farther! Jared’s firm manufactures a wet-vacuum system that appears to be able to harvest DNA evidence from virtually ANY surface. The testimonial videos on their website are a parade of law enforcement professionals who see their product as an advance nearly as important as the actual DNA identification it facilitates.
Sometimes we run a Meetup on inspiration, and sometimes we run it on sea stories. This time we’re in for some good old-fashioned technical geekery!
Jared is going to show us his product and explain how it fits into the larger pictures of law enforcement and practical genetic engineering. By the end, we should have a pretty clear idea of just how close we are to that weird dual-edged future, where on the one hand nobody gets away with murder… and on the other, physical anonymity is impossible and there is nowhere left to hide.
My bet is that Gattaca is closer than we think. DON’T MISS THIS ONE!
