2020-07-09 RINGKNOCKER Virtual Meetup - Dan Lyons Mans His Oar
Dan Lyons (USNA '81) is a former Surface Warfare Officer and a champion rower who represented the United States in coxed pair rowing at the 1988 Summer Olympics. This is a fascinating story, not least because of the grit it must have taken to maintain Olympic-class conditioning across a couple of SWO tours! Dan's story will be of particular interest to those who were at the Naval Academy in the early nineties, who will remember him well as a crew coach and a professional mentor to many. We loved Dan's message! Far beyond engineering and spit-shining shoes, service academy graduates are trained to LEAD... and our nation has rarely needed great leadership more than during the current COVID era. We welcome Dan to the RINGKNOCKER family, and hope he comes around often! Dan now runs Team Concepts, a leadership consulting firm based in Narberth, PA. Dan Lyons The Whole Story
This is the full RINGKNOCKER presentation of Olympic oarsman and Team Concepts founder Dan Lyons (USNA '81). In the After-Action Report we teased all the people who DIDN'T make it to Dan's talk that they would have to subscribe to the website to see what they'd missed... and then we saw the video and realized it would be a disservice NOT to share it. So here it is. If you care about human performance, there's a lot to chew on here, and if you just came for stories, this one is epic! And yes, please DO subscribe to the website. Dan Lyons on Swing (RVM #53)
Olympic oarsman Dan Lyons (USNA '81) describes what happens when eight powerful humans are hydraulically linked into a single machine in a state of muscular overload and exquisite physical pain. If they're lucky, they develop SWING: an elusive, mindful state of grace that offers transcendence but only recedes when pursued directly. Swing is the ultimate competitive advantage: a swinging crew will shatter standing records and leave its rivals literally eating its wake. After racking his oars, Dan founded Team Concepts, which deploys an eclectic hash of science and athleticism to teach the art of flow to teams that span every specialty and industry. Whatever you do, if you do it with a bunch of other people, Team Concepts will help you find your swing. Learn more at https://teamconceptsinc.com/ Are you a current or former military officer? Dan Lyons at the 1986 Goodwill Games (RVM #53)
Olympic oarsman Dan Lyons (USNA '81) was one of a four-man crew that rowed to a gold-medal finish in the 1986 Goodwill Games. In this clip, Dan tells the story, digging deep into the leadership qualities and coaching techniques that pulled a championship performance out of a crew nobody thought worth mentioning. This is a classic underdog story, shared by a master storyteller who was there in the boat, calling the race while pulling his oar. It is also a master class on the magic of creative, positive leadership. If RINGKNOCKER only ever got to share one video clip, this might be our choice, so enjoy! After racking his oars, Dan founded Team Concepts, which deploys an eclectic hash of science and athleticism to teach the art of swing to teams that span every specialty and industry. Dan Lyons on the Paradox of Winning (RVM #53)
Olympic oarsman Dan Lyons (USNA '81) attacks a key paradox of human performance: the closer we get to peak performance, the less we care about winning. Dan Lyons (USNA '81) is a lifelong student of SWING, the mutual flow state achieved by elite athletes performing—like rowers—in closely coordinated teams. After racking his oars, Dan founded Team Concepts, which deploys an eclectic hash of science and athleticism to teach the art of swing to teams that span every specialty and industry. Whatever you do, if you do it with a bunch of other people, Team Concepts will help you find your swing. Learn more at https://teamconceptsinc.com/ Are you a current or former military officer?
